eye of the gate

… a glimpse of what's haPpening

up in the air

If you are traveling soon you must understand a couple of things:

Gals: high heels are not cool at the airport… it doesn’t matter where you are going, who you are traveling with or who is picking you up at the airport. Comfortable shoes are a must! This doesn’t mean that you need to wear your running shoes (unless you will run a marathon straight from the plane). If you don’t care about the security checkpoint and walking on barefoot my recommendation is Cole Haan flats, but if you feel icky -like I sometimes feel- and prefer to walk with socks your are fine with Converse. Please no sandals or flip flops (even if you are going to Cancun, those could wait!). Items that you shouldn’t forget: cardiganscarf and a book.

I am always cold! I could be on the hottest city and I have a cardigan shoved in my handbag… It’s inexplicable for me why someone would travel wearing a bermuda, skirt or dress.

Guys: keep it simple. Comfortable T-shirt, jeans and casual shoes. I’ve heard the complain of the shoe laces, if this applies to you, Car Shoes are your way to go. Please NO tank tops.

Could you find anything more inspiring than someone sketching on the park with live music? Not only I was in Florence, enjoying the beautiful city, food, wine and culture but also I had to see this beautiful girl sketching in a bench next to a guy playing the guitar and singing in Italian… simply breathtaking. I tried to take a peak at what she was doing, without any success, but I was able to take some pictures from far away without interrupting her.

Part of the fun of what I do is to imagine how is life of the people I photograph. I am assuming she is going to Art school (the giant moleskine was screaming fashion knowledge). Something with the length of her hair, the bangs and the way she was sketching captured everyone’s eye. Then I went to the other side of the street to take more pictures when I saw her bohemian-bright-colorful- messenger bag and colorful bracelets… it was then when I raised my case, she was going to Art school.

Why her outfit worked? Skinny jeans, bomber jackets and flats are basically holding hands, but the pop colors of the messenger bag and the bracelets makes her special. Long time ago a friend asked to another one if she was depressed, she replied why and the other said: because you are not wearing any accessories! I agree with that statement, accessories are almost everything in an outfit. Ives Saint Laurent once said: Dressing is a way of life.

Listening to Placebo -This picture- the lyric made me laugh when I heard “I wrote a poem that described her world”. Here I am writing about this pretty stylish Poet. How would his world be?

I like this poet-in-the-corner trend, and to be honest I like it even more when they look stylish. To be an artist doesn’t mean you gotta look sloppy. The preppy look matches the Smith Corona type writer. In reality it’s not too complicated to look young and fresh, a white oxford shirt and a cardigan will never go wrong. Our street poet also has a beard, a la mode eye glasses and a chic black scarf (things we see every single day, but in his case executed impeccably).

Federico: I LOVE YOUR EYEGLASSES! Your accessories are impeccable!

I went to a vintage show and saw hundreds of eyeglasses (from the 18th Century to 1980′s). Eyeglasses certainly add character. When we were kids wearing glasses wasn’t cool, but things have changed. For those of you who are looking for new frames you MUST check out Allyn Scura. As they sell unique, one-of-a-kind vintage pieces, the website doesn’t show a broad assortment as the one you can experience on one of their stands. If you are lucky enough to have a show in your town you should not miss it.

Visiting from Switzerland and completely understood San Francisco! Even though we are having THE MOST BEAUTIFUL DAYS in the city, you can’t leave home without your cardigan and scarf. That’s just the drill here.

Loved that she paired her outfit with Havaianas. Every time I see them down the street it just reminds me the summer spirit. -

The trend:

Longchamp Le Pliage oversized tote. Available at: Nordstrom

Casual shorts. Available at: Net-a-porterForever 21Shopbop, Barneys, Neiman Marcus, GapBergdorf Goodman, Bluefly and for our UK readers ASOS

I know, I know… I just said yesterday that plaids are huge for this spring and here I am being redundant.

But… I LOVE the fact that she is not afraid on mixing plaids with stripes.  The shirt dress is boyish, but her haircut and accessories makes this outfit something cool and feminine.

The boots with the studs are awesome!
